Coaching psychology has been greatly enriched by drawing on the methods and techniques of psychotherapy. One example of an evidence-based approach is Satir Family Therapy which has a range of powerful techniques. The purpose of the current paper is to outline the methods and techniques of family therapy, to identify the overlap with coaching psychology and to highlight other family therapy techniques not used by coaching psychologists. The paper concludes that there is a clear parallel between family therapy techniques and those used in coaching psychology, however the former does offer additional techniques which can easily be adopted by coaching psychologists to augment their approach.
